Student competition

We invite students to submit a project proposal. This project must fall within the mandate of the BETTER program which is to reduce the burden of hypoglycemia for people living with type 1 diabetes.

Our program includes, among other things, a registry of over 2300 participants living with type 1 diabetes. The catalog of variables contained in this registry is available here.

To win

Two student-led projects will be selected and funded ($5000 per project). The proposed project can be an analysis of registry data or any other project that falls within the mandate of the BETTER program.

Eligibility Criteria

Please note that students who wish to submit a project are not required to have previous research experience in type 1 diabetes. In addition, the proposed project may involve more than one student, but one student must be identified as the leader.

To participate

Please submit your project by completing the form and including a copy of your CV.

Projects will be evaluated by a panel of researchers and patient partners. The two selected projects will be announced by June 23, 2022 and funding will begin on July 1, 2022.

The results of the funded projects must be presented to the BETTER investigators and at a national or international scientific conference and must be published scientifically.

FAQ

Proposed projects do not have to be limited to an analysis from the BETTER registry. A student may propose a project involving an interview with people living with type 1 diabetes. It is also possible to submit a project that involves the development of a questionnaire on a specific topic to which participants in the BETTER registry will be invited to respond.

Eligible expenses include compensation for participants, materials for a clinical study, consultation fees with a biostatistician, publication fees, abstract submission fees for a conference, registration fees, transportation and accommodation for a conference. A student scholarship is not an eligible expense.

Yes, the proposed project may involve more than one student, but one student must be identified as the leader. The leader will be the contact person with the BETTER team and will be responsible for ensuring that the project is completed within 12 months. At the submission stage of the project, it is important that the students discuss each other’s contribution to the project.
